Cardio or weights first? Start with the activity you most want to do well today. A quality strength session, a key run and a general fitness visit do not require identical decisions. A short, easy warm-up is different from a demanding cardio workout. Choosing weights first does not mean skipping preparation. Use familiar movement that helps you approach the planned exercises comfortably and with control. Research comparing the two orders finds a small average lower-body strength advantage for strength first. That makes it a reasonable starting choice when lifting quality is the priority, not a guarantee for everybody. If today’s main goal is a specific run or ride, doing it while fresh may make practical sense. Judge whether later lifting can still be controlled, and move or scale it if needed. Notice what happens to technique, planned effort and completed work in the second block. If quality repeatedly drops, reduce the demand or separate the sessions. One difficult workout does not settle the question. Both aerobic and strength activity belong in a useful week. No order is a guaranteed fat-loss shortcut. Use the decision table below to choose a session you can complete well and repeat.
